A new model drops every month and everyone shouts that 'this one changes everything'. To build, you don't need to follow them all: you need judgment to choose by the task. This map survives whatever models come out.
Don't memorize names, turn knobs
Choosing a model is turning four knobs by the task: capability (how smart and precise), speed (how fast it responds), cost (how much each response costs) and privacy (how sensitive the data is). None is 'the good one' always — the task decides where each knob goes.
The big ones in 2026
Claude (Anthropic) stands out in reasoning, code and long texts with judgment. Gemini (Google) shines in speed and cost with its Flash models, and in integrating with Google's ecosystem. GPT (OpenAI) is still a strong all-rounder. All three are excellent; the real difference is your task and your budget, not the trendy ranking.
My practical rule
I use a fast, cheap model (Flash-type) for 90% of tasks — classify, summarize, answer simple things — and reserve the most capable model for the hard stuff: clinical reasoning, complex code, decisions that don't forgive. That keeps spend low without sacrificing quality where it truly matters.
The one who builds stays more up to date than the one who scrolls announcements. Try the new thing only if it solves a pain you have today.
